Roberto Martinez gives controversial view on Everton boss Marco Silva after Liverpool defeat

Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez has called on the club to give Marco Silva more time - despite dropping into the Premier League relegation zone.

The Blues were comfortably beaten by Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night, losing 5-2 at Anfield.

Silva's misery was compounded by the vast amount of changes Jurgen Klopp made, which rubbed salt in the wounds as they breezed past their near neighbours.

The result, coupled with Southampton's win over Norwich City, dropped Everton into the bottom three after collecting only 14 points from their first 15 Premier League games.

However, in a view that is sure to be controversial with much of the fanbase, former boss Martinez has reiterated his belief that Everton must not keep changing managers and should give Silva some more time.

"I think it's difficult, we spoke before, it's 20 years that Everton doesn't get a win at Anfield. There is a reason there, psychologically," he told Amazon Prime TV after the full-time whistle at Anfield.

"Unfortunately for the season of Everton, they've got 14 points after 15 games.

"It's not the fact of coming to Anfield and conceding five goals.

"There has been a big turnaround of players, at the end of last season Marco Silva looked like the team was starting to get a good way of playing and in football, you need to have a vision and be patient.

"It's almost, he shouldn't be in a position where you need to survive defeat. I think Everton now needs to look a little bit further, try to put the eyes clearly. It's 15 games into the season, there's plenty of points still to fight for. This season should just be a transition.

"I enjoy seeing a vision behind a project and seeing someone trying to work hard at it. It's not just about bringing players in to get results, we all know Everton is a process.

"Everton is one of the most historic games in the British game. You have to believe in a project and give managers time. Has it worked in the past changing managers and hoping one side to another?

"I don't think that's something you can analyse, you can analyse how the team is getting stronger and trying to grow.

"You need to have patience in a project and allow a team to develop into something into with a clear vision on how to get the best out of the group."
