Roberto Martinez extends Belgium contract through to 2022 World Cup

Roberto Martinez will remain Belgium head coach through to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after signing a contract extension, the Royal Belgian Football Federation has announced.

The Spaniard's deal was set to expire after this summer's European Championships, but since the tournament has been postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Martinez has now signed a two-year extension.

The 46-year-old took charge of Belgium in 2016 after notable spells with Swansea, Wigan and Everton, guiding The Red Devils to a third-place finish in the 2018 World Cup after beating England in the third-place play-off.

Belgium, ranked first in Fifa's official world rankings, won all 10 qualification games to book their place in the European Championships, where they were placed in a group alongside Denmark, Finland and Russia.

The contract extension was announced on Belgium's Instagram, with Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard revealing the deal in a mock-up phone call with Romelu Lukaku while playing FIFA 20 .

“Okay, let's see what coach we will get,” Hazard said. “Suspense, suspense, suspense... no way... it can't be him. Oh... Roberto. The coach has signed! That's great. The coach has signed! Ole! Ole!

“Hi Romelu,” he added, in a pretend phone call with Lukaku. “All well? Did you see the coach has signed? Yes, isn't it great news? Ok, bye bye!”
