Roberto Martinez believes Carlo Ancelotti must claim a domestic trophy with Everton in order to instill a winning mentality at Goodison Park.
The former Blues boss explained "he always felt" that a trophy was required to make his team believe they could go to any other club in the league and come away with a win.
Everton's defeat at Tottenham on Monday night was the 39th consecutive league match they have failed to record a victory in, away at the Premier League's so-called big six.
The last time they won was at Old Trafford in December 2013 when Martinez was manager, and coincidentally, it was also during the Spainard's three-year reign that the Toffees won a league match after trailing at half-time in 2015.
"You cannot really get a winning mentality until you actually win", Martinez told inews.
"I always felt that we had to win a domestic trophy in order to be able to believe that you can go to any of the top-four teams and beat them."
Martinez set on a keen pursuit for cup success during his tenure at Goodison Park and lost out in two domestic cup semi-final defeats in 2016 before his sacking that year.
The Blues haven't found much success since the now Belgium manager departed, but since the appointment of Ancelotti in December 2019 there has been a huge upsurge in form and belief around the club.
“I’m excited to see Carlo Ancelotti in his first full season and maybe having three windows,” Martinez added.
“You can see already that the team has been really solid.”
