Roberto Mancini ruthless streak at Euro 2020 reminds Man City fans of Mario Balotelli incident

Italy have been one of the stand-out teams at Euro 2020 this summer, winning all four of their games and conceding just once in the last 12 games under former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini.

In the last 16 encounter against Austria, Italy struggled to break the defence down however and only broke the deadlock in extra-time en route to a 2-1 victory at Wembley.

But one moment at the end of regulation time caught the eye of Manchester City fans in particular.

With the game locked at 0-0 and Italy pushing for a winner, the ball was floated over to the back post and found winger Domenico Berardi in acres of space unmarked. But with just six minutes left of the game, Berardi went for the spectacular and opted for a bicycle kick.

Instead of the ball nestling in the net, it flew well over the bar. Mancini's response was to immediately haul him off the field and replace him with Federico Chiesa, who went on to score the opening goal of the game.

It was a reminder of a previous occasion during a pre-season friendly as Manchester City took on LA Galaxy in the United States back in 2011.

After being played in behind by a through ball, Mario Balotelli chose to attempt a flashy back heel instead of just scoring what was an easy chance to double the lead. Just two minutes later, the Italian striker was substituted just half an hour into the game by James Milner by Mancini.

As he stepped off the pitch, the two had a furious bust-up with Balotelli clearly gesturing at Mancini in anger. But the manager stuck by his guns and became known as a disciplinarian and authority figure in management.

It was a throwback to his City days and just another example of why Mancini is one of the best coaches in the world today.
