Roberto Firmino sends emotional message over Liverpool captaincy and Alisson goal

Liverpool star Roberto Firmino has sent out an emotional message after captaining his side to victory at West Brom.

A late header from Alisson sealed the win in stunning fashion as the Reds strengthened their position in the hunt for a top four place.

Mohamed Salah had scored in the first half to cancel out an early Hal Robson-Kanu strike.

But the keeper went forward for an injury time corner to secure three vital points.

And in the absence of the usual team leaders, Brazilian forward Firmino was given the armband at the Hawthorns this afternoon. Taking to Instagram after the remarkable match, he put his feelings into words.

Firmino said: "It's one [of] the biggest honours in football to be the captain of your team.

"But to be the captain of Liverpool FC and for these boys is beyond the greatest feeling imaginable.

"What a fantastic win today and even better that my brother [Alisson] scored the winning goal.

"You're so blessed for the Lord. We love you."

The result leaves Liverpool in fifth place - and now just one point behind Chelsea.

Two games remain across the board in the league, with a trip to Burnley next for Jurgen Klopp's men before the final tie against Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Prior to those clashes however, all eyes will be on Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening as Chelsea host Leicester City.
