Roberto Firmino injury update as Liverpool striker faces spell on sidelines

Roberto Firmino will have further assessment on his hamstring injury - with the striker facing a race against time to be fit for the start of Liverpool's Champions League campaign.

Firmino underwent scans to ascertain the extent of the damage that forced him to limp off shortly before half-time during the 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Chelsea on Saturday.

While the initial diagnosis is the injury is not serious, the striker must undergo more tests and is expected to be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks.

Firmino had in any case been ruled of Brazil's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, joining compatriots Alisson Becker and Fabinho in staying in England due to quarantine issues.

The forward, who was among the final players to return for pre-season training having featured for his country in the Copa America, was making his first start of the season at the weekend having been on the bench for the opening two games as Diogo Jota led the attack.

Firmino is now unlikely to feature when Liverpool resume after the international break with a Premier League trip to Leeds United on Sunday, September 12.

And he must be considered a doubt for when Jurgen Klopp's side begin the Champions League group phase with the visit of Italian giants AC Milan three days later.

With those matches starting a busy spell of seven games in 22 days, Klopp will not want to be without Firmino for any significant length of time.
