Roberto Firmino injury highlights Man City key edge over Liverpool in Premier League title race

We're definitely not going to go as far as to say we're happy to hear Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino has suffered a serious hamstring injury, though his absence is a massive blow to one of Manchester City's biggest title rivals.

Jurgen Klopp revealed on Friday afternoon that the hamstring injury picked up by the Brazilian in his side's 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday was "serious" and that he expects him to be out for over four weeks.

I'm not sure whether it's possible for there to be a 'good' time for your main striker to miss a month of the season, though the upcoming international break does at least mean his missed game time will be limited.

As I've already mentioned, we should never rejoice at such news. Firstly, it's never nice to see a player get injured, and secondly, Liverpool's current frontline woes could impact City just as easily, right? Well, not really.

Having failed to find a replacement for Sergio Aguero over the summer, there was a fear that City could look slightly toothless in attack this season.

However, the Argentinian's injury woes throughout the 2020/21 campaign meant that Pep Guardiola was forced to adapt and he stumbled upon a system - I say 'stumbled upon' as if he wasn't sat staring at a tactics board for 19 hours a day trying to discover such a ploy - that saw his side crowned Premier League champions and has already gleaned 41 goals in 17 games this season.

City are no strangers to the false-nine system and used it prior to Aguero's injury issues, though the past few seasons have seen them fine-tune the art of playing without a conventional striker.

"I’m pretty sure when he finishes playing people will write books about the way he interpreted the false nine position,” Klopp said of Firmino after Liverpool routed Manchester United a couple of weeks ago.

City might not have a similar standout performer in the position but Guardiola's squad could effectively run a competition in which the winner gets to spearhead their attack for the weekend.

Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Cole Palmer have all enjoyed stints as the moveable focal point of City's attack, meaning the possibility of Guardiola being unable to call upon a forward who knows how to play City's go-to system is almost nil.

It's not lost on me that Diogo Jota has done a fine job when asked to lead the Liverpool line and has even been preferred to Firmino on occasions, though there's no doubting who Klopp's main man is and the Brazilian's ability to drop into pockets of space and link play with his teammates makes him arguably the most important player in the team.

You'd of course be right to scoff at such a statement before pointing to Mohamed Salah's incredible goal record, but don't just take my word for it when assessing how important Firmino is to Liverpool.

Listen to Reds boss himself.

"He’s a very important player to us - he’s a connector," Klopp said. "He’s the best offensive defender I ever saw in my life, definitely! He’s a ball chaser, defensively incredibly smart with all of the things he’s doing. Technically on the highest level."

Sounds like a tough act to follow.

Liverpool's style of play with two wide forwards looking to run in behind doesn't work without a lynchpin playing slightly off the frontline to connect the dots. Firmino is that man and unfortunately, they look set to be without him for a while.

Over at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola has about four or five spares he could probably offer Klopp in the meantime, but I dare say he would never be quite so accommodating.
