Roberto Firmino hands Liverpool Champions League Final injury boost

Liverpool have confirmed that Roberto Firmino is closing in on a return to full team training.

The Brazilian sustained a groin injury at Melwood in the build-up to last month’s 5-0 Premier League win over Huddersfield at Anfield.

And he appeared to exacerbate the issue while appearing as a substitute during the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou that followed.

As a result, the Reds’ No9 has missed their last three outings - a famous comeback win over Barca and league victories against Newcastle United and Wolves.

However, it appears Firmino is now inching closer to full fitness as Jurgen Klopp’s squad prepare for a Champions League Final clash with Tottenham.

Having flown out to the club’s Marbella training camp early to take part in fitness work, the 27-year-old joined his teammates for their first session on Tuesday morning.

Liverpool’s official website states that Firmino will now be ‘carefully managed’ by physios as he follows a specialised programme in a bid to be fully fit for Madrid.

A return to full team training would provide a significant boost for Klopp, who has used the striker in every one of his European games as Reds boss aside from that 4-0 win over Barcelona.
