Roberto Firmino can end second Liverpool 'goal drought' of week against Newcastle United

Roberto Firmino scored his first goal at Anfield in the Premier League this season - and indeed the first home goal he has scored since March 2019 against Tottenham - when he netted against Chelsea midweek.

And he will now have his eyes set on ending another goal drought of sorts over the weekend.

Firmino, who has scored a total of nine league goals this season, has played six times against Newcastle United, losing just once. But he has never scored against the Magpies either home or away.

Firmino missed the 3-2 win at St James' Park in the penultimate match of last season, but has won in each of his last three appearances against them.

Prior to that, he had failed to win in his first three matches against Newcastle, losing 2-0 in his first clash back in 2015, and then drew in his next two.

This season, Newcastle have tended to concede at least twice against the top-six teams, losing 3-1 at Anfield, 5-0 at both Leicester City and Manchester City, and 4-1 at Arsenal.

Newcastle Fan TV’s Sam Mulliner explained as much on the Behind Enemy Lines podcast on the Blood Red channel ahead of the clash at St James’ Park.

He said: "Spurs at home the other day, we didn’t deserve to get beat at all. You see Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham and think ‘Harry Kane strikes again’.

"But it wasn’t like that at all. Newcastle played some really nice stuff and didn’t deserve to lose.

"Other games have been terrible - Man City, in particular. The Leicester one is another I’m not particularly keen to remember.

"I was at the Emirates for the Arsenal defeat and first half we were superb.

"But the players switched off and from the moment the whistle went for the second half, we were destroyed - it was quite perplexing.

"Even in the game at Anfield Newcastle went 1-0 up thought Jetro Willems and then it all went so wrong.

"But it’s just a case of riding out to the end of the season now - we saw that on Monday in the last game against Brighton, which could have been played on the beach."

That will give Firmino hope of ending his dry spell against them - though Newcastle did hold Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at St James' Park in November.
