Roberto Firmino 'at the gates of hell' amid Liverpool's Premier League struggles

Roberto Firmino and Liverpool's struggles this season have not gone unnoticed over in Spain.

With the injury-hit Reds down in fourth place in the Premier League table, Sunday's 4-1 defeat at home to table-toppers Manchester City surely served as the final confirmation that they will be unsuccessful in their attempts to defend the league title they won last season.

While the world appears to be falling over themselves to point out the reasons for that failure, one thing that is clear is that Firmino has been failing to fire in front of goal this season.

The Brazilian scored the opener in the recent win at Tottenham, but that is his only goal in the last 11 appearances in all competitions, and he's netted just six in total this season.

That sort of form has attracted the attention of Spanish sports daily Marca, who have included Firmino on a list of eight struggling players they say are 'at the gates of hell' due to their underperformance this season.

Firmino joins Tottenham pair Dele Alli and Gareth Bale, Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, his recently departed ex-teammate Mesut Ozil and Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga on the list.

Barcelona's Miralem Pjanic and Real Madrid's Eden Hazard are also there, as is Firmino's ex-Liverpool colleague Daniel Sturridge, who has been without a club for almost a year.

Despite both his own and Liverpool's struggles, Firmino is backing Jurgen Klopp to turn Liverpool's form around.

"He is never negative," he said after the City loss.

"He's never let our heads go down, he's always been motivating the team, letting us know what we are capable of, what we demonstrated last year and for us to look ahead.

"He knows what we can achieve."
