Robert Woods on fixing Rams offense: ‘Be the hammer, not the nail’

If you look at the numbers, the Los Angeles Rams appear to have one of the best offenses in the NFL. They’re fifth in yards per game (413.6), sixth in points per game (29.2) and second in passing yards per game.

So what’s with all the red flags being raised and panic setting in about the Rams? Those are primarily the result of the lack of balance – they’re 24th in rushing attempts per game and 22nd in yards per game on the ground – and the offensive line’s struggles.

The group appeared to get back on track Thursday night against the Seahawks, but Robert Woods still doesn’t feel the Rams are on the level they were last season offensively.

“I personally don’t. I personally feel like we’ve got a lot of work to do,” he told ESPN after the game. “We’ve just got to play better, play faster, play more aggressive and be nasty. Really, that’s the biggest thing – be the aggressor. Be the hammer, not the nail.”

One way to “be the hammer” is to impose your will with the running game. The Rams haven’t done that much this season, attempting just 10 rushes with RBs in Week 4 against the Bucs and 16 on Thursday night. The phrase “establish the run” is overused in today’s NFL, but there’s still some truth to it.

Offenses need balance and the Rams have very little of that right now. expect the intensity level to be turned up a bit next week against the 49ers as Sean McVay tries to right the ship in L.A.
