Robert Woods: Last season was ‘just the beginning of what I can do’

If not for Cooper Kupp’s injury a season ago, the Los Angeles Rams could have had three wideouts with at least 1,000 yards each. Brandin Cooks came in and had a fantastic first season with the Rams, catching 80 passes for 1,204 yards and five touchdowns.

Robert Woods, who has only improved in each of his last four seasons, put up the best year of his career in 2018. He caught 86 passes for 1,219 yards and six touchdowns, leading the team in all three categories.

“I would say last season was my best season as a pro so far,” Woods said on an upcoming episode of “Behind the Grind.” “I was able to put up 1,200-plus yards, and for me personally, I feel like that’s just the beginning of what I can do.”

Woods has taken his game to new heights in Los Angeles, becoming a No. 1 receiver for the Rams in 2018. Before joining the Rams in free agency, Woods never had a season with more than 700 yards. In the last two years, he’s eclipsed that mark both times.

He’s a team-first guy, too, always doing whatever the offense needs. He’s a willing blocker, a sharp route runner and can play any receiver spot. Last season, he moved into the slot when Kupp went down, showing valuable versatility at wide receiver.

The game has slowed down for him, too, which players often talk about being an important aspect of their development.

“I’m able to comfortably understand the game — real confident on the field, understand the coverages, understand how defenses are going to play me on a play, and our team,” Woods said. “I think that helps going into year seven, I’m able to be calm, be confident, and be comfortable when I’m walking out on the field.”

With Cooks and Kupp playing alongside him, and Jared Goff as his quarterback, the sky is the limit for Woods and the Rams.
