Robert the Bruce campaigners hope Dumbarton museum plans will honour Scots King

Campaigners supporting the Lennox Herald’s Let the Bruce Rule the Rock campaign have expressed their hope that Robert the Bruce will be celebrated in Glencairn House if the plans get the green light.

There are currently no items relating to the King of Scots in the West Dunbartonshire Council museum collection.

Improving signage to historic sites a “priority” for Dumbarton

But those who feel more should be done to commemorate him in the area hope this will not prevent the council from highlightling his importance in Dumbarton.

Duncan Thomson, chairman of Strathleven Artizans, said he is hopeful Robert the Bruce will have a place in the museum.

The Renton based historical group spend their time travelling the globe to spread the word further as to how big a role this region played in the history of the King of Scots.

Their Robert the Bruce Heritage Centre in Renton is filled to the brim with fascinating artefacts and information detailing the life and times of the outlaw king.

One of their many prized pieces is a wooden throne, carved from the Bruce Oak tree which fell in 2004.

Duncan added: “It is sad that the council don’t have any items relating to Bruce in their collection.

“We were happy to see the plans for the museum being announced and while we are not sure that the High Street is the perfect place for it, anything that could point to a better future for promoting the history of Robert the Bruce is welcomed by the Strathleven Artizans.”

A council spokeswoman said: “We are very proud of Dumbarton’s rich heritage and any historical links to our town will be explored as potential features for a new museum space, should the proposal be approved.”
