Robert Rock shoots Irish Open record of 60 to top leaderboard

Robert Rock has shot a record Irish Open round of 60 to take control at the top of the third round leaderboard in Lahinch.

And Rock, who has beaten the previous best of 61 by Graeme McDowell and Ross Fisher, was close to firing a 59 with an eagle putt on 18 just shaving the hole.

Famously the Englishman lost to Shane Lowry in a play-off at the Irish Open in Baltray a decade ago and has put himself in a strong position to finally lift the trophy tomorrow.

"I'm delighted, surprised and relieved," said Rock, who was also the Irish Open runner up in 2013.

"I haven't been playing well this year. But this was fun."

Rock delivered a six-birdie salvo from the 13th hole.

But he didn't realise he had a chance to shoot 59 until he looked at his scorecard on the last after hitting his tee shot.

It was only then and clocked that par was 70, not 71.

"I wasn't going to leave my eagle putt short on 18," he smiled.

"I had to putt out of the fringe and it went 18 inches by.

"I'm 42 now and I've always wanted to shoot a low score like this, I've seen others do it over the years and wondered if I'd get the chance."

This could be third time lucky for the part-time golf coach in Ireland but he will have the likes of Rafa Cabrera Bello and John Rahm snapping at his heels on the West Clare links tomorrow.

"I'd love it to be but that tournament 10 years ago was still fantastic, Shane deserved to win and he has been fantastic," remarked Rock.

"That was my first real chance to win a tournament and there were things I'd do differently now than I did then".
