Robert Redford is in mourning following the death of his son James at the age of 58, a representative said.
The 84-year-old Hollywood legend said the "grief is immeasurable" after James Redford, an activist and filmmaker, died on Friday after being diagnosed with liver cancer.
Robert, who is a retired actor and director known for films including Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and The Way We Were, has asked for privacy.
Cindi Berger, Redford's publicist, said: "The grief is immeasurable with the loss of a child. Jamie was a loving son, husband and father.
"His legacy lives on through his children, art, filmmaking and devoted passion to conservation and the environment."
The statement continued: "Robert Redford is mourning with his family during this difficult time and asks for privacy."
James' wife of 32 years, Kyle, shared news of his death on Twitter.
Alongside pictures of the couple and their two children, she said: "Jamie died today. We're heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many.
“He will be deeply missed.”
She continued: “As his wife of 32 years, I’m most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together.
“I don’t know what we would’ve done without them over the past 2yrs.”
Kyle told the Salt Lake Tribune that James, whose documentary films included The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia, discovered the cancer diagnosis in November last year while awaiting a liver transplant.
His liver disease returned two years ago, she added.
James had suffered with health issues since his early childhood and had received two liver transplants before he reached his twenties.
The movie maker - whose mother is Lola Van Wagenen - followed in the footsteps of his legendary father in the film industry.
James made a name for himself mostly in documentaries which focused on the health and the environment.
Redford has three other children, including the actress Amy Redford.
