Robert Quinn explains why he picked Cowboys over Saints

The New Orleans Saints nearly swung a trade for veteran pass rusher Robert Quinn earlier this offseason, who the Miami Dolphins ended up sending to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft — not much to pay to add a player with 69 sacks in his career.

Quinn was allowed to choose his destination, making visits to both the Saints and Cowboys facilities and meeting with coaches before reaching a decision. In the end, he sided with Dallas.

“It was more of a gut feeling,” Quinn told Jori Epstein of USA Today. “Sometimes your gut leads you in the right direction. … So far, it’s been a great transition for me.”

The Cowboys have enjoyed moderate success in recent years, winning the NFC East title in 2016 and 2018, but making little headway in the playoffs. But for Quinn, their style of play on defense was more appealing than what he saw in New Orleans.

“Specifically, it was the way they allowed the D-line to play high-flying,” Quinn continued. “We get to attack and get in the backfield more than in other places. I think it was kind of one of those where we could have fun and disrupt the backfield which they want us to do.”

While he acknowledged that he had “people chirping in my ear both ways,” in a bid to influence his decision, Quinn ultimately chose to go to the team where he would best fit in. The differences in defensive philosophy ended up meaning the most to him.
