Robert Peel statue in George Square vandalised

The statue of Robert Peel which sits in George Square has been vandalised.

Pictures emerged yesterday of the statue having been spraypainted in Glasgow city centre.

The letters ACAB - an abbreviation for 'all cops are b******s' can be seen defacing the plinth, alongside a hammer and sickle.

Robert Peel, a two-time Prime Minister, is credited with the formation of modern British policing, having founded the Metropolitan Police Service.

Euan Blockley, councillor for Glasgow's Linn Ward, posted a photo of the statue and commented: "Disgusting to see that the Robert Peel statue in George Square has been vandalised.

"The slogan ACAB (All cops are b******s) is deeply offensive to the hard working officers that keep us safe in this city.

"Communism is an ideology that has murdered millions and seeing its symbol graffitied in our city is vile."

A Police Scotland spokesperson told Glasgow Live: "We can confirm that we are continuing enquiries into this incident."
