Robert Pattinson's The Batman begins filming as director Matt Reeves shares on-set photo

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves has confirmed that his film The Batman has begun shooting.

The new DC Comics film will star Robert Pattinson as the heroic vigilante Batman/Bruce Wayne and will be released in cinemas next year.

Reeves confirmed the news by taking to social media to share a photo from the set.

The image on Twitter was captioned: " #DayOne #TheBatman"

The clapper in the shot displays what could be a new logo for the film and is seated on a brown leather armchair.

The upcoming release is set to take Batman back to his detective roots and also stars Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as The Riddler/Edward Nashton, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin/Oz Cobblepot.

Also starring in the new outing is Andy Serkis as Batman's loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth and John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone.

We can also expect to see a performance from actor Peter Sarsgaard but his role remains unknown at this time - some theorise he will play the villainous but conflicted Two-Face/Harvey Dent.

Filming will take place in the UK with scenes shot in London, while Gotham City is believed to be primarily portrayed by the Scottish city of Glasgow.

Meanwhile, R-Patz has responded to the backlash against his previous comments where he said he didn't see Batman as a superhero.

Speaking to Time Out, Robert said: "I wasn't educated about the subject.

"People got very angry about it. It’s bizarre. I still can’t understand the argument.

"Okay, he’s a superhero, I’m sorry! The next headline: “Pattinson retracts: Batman is, in fact, a superhero. He takes it back.”"

Well, we're all behind Robert here!

The Batman is released in cinemas on June 25, 2020.
