Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 US election is almost complete, the acting attorney general has said.

Matthew Whitaker said he hopes a final report from Mr Mueller would arrive “as soon as possible” as he briefed reporters on the latest developments on Monday.

"I've been fully briefed on the investigation and I look forward to Director Mueller delivering the final report," Mr Whitaker said at a press conference earlier.

"Right now the investigation is I think close to being completed and I hope that we can get the report from Director Mueller as soon as possible."

Special Counsel Mr Mueller has so far been tight-lipped about when the months of closed-door grand jury sessions and plea deals will conclude.

This has left questions over how far into the White House his probe will reach and what will happen to his findings.

The probe most recently ensnared long-time confidant of Donald Trump, political operative Roger Stone, and led to the conviction of the president’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort.

Mr Mueller is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and whether Mr Trump’s campaign members coordinated with Moscow officials.

The Kremlin denies election meddling and the now-US leader denies any collusion with Russia and has often referred to the probe as a "witch hunt”.

Reports that the investigation is almost finished came as it was revealed Mr Manafort’s sentencing set for Feburary 8 in Virginia was postponed by a federal judge.

Prosecutors said he lied on at least five different subjects ranging from his contacts with Trump administration officials in 2018 to his interactions with his former business partner in Ukraine, Konstantin Kilimnik, who Mr Mueller’s office has said has ties to Russian intelligence.
