Robert Mathis stepping away from coaching role with Colts

Indianapolis Colts all-time sack leader Robert Mathis is stepping down from his role as a full-time coach with the team, head coach Frank Reich said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings in Arizona.

Mathis, who held the role as a pass rush consultant, will no longer be on the team’s coaching staff but will still help out when he can. His role with the team was basically an assistant defensive coach tasked with developing the young pass rushers.

While Mathis will be stepping down from a full-time gig with the Colts, it seems he has something in the works to stay in the game helping young pass rushers. According to Mike Wells of ESPN, who first reported the news, Mathis will be working at a performance facility in Westfield, IN.

Mathis left that position with the team so that he could team up with a number of former NFL players to work at a sports performance facility in Westfield, Ind. Mathis would not have been able to be an assistant coach and work at the performance facility due to NFL league rules. Now he has the freedom to work with players during a time where teams are not allowed to train their players.

It remains to be seen if the Colts will fill Mathis’ role on the coaching staff, but the franchise leader in sacks won’t be working as much with the young pass rushers after stepping down.
