Robert Lewandowski becomes first player to match Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi feat

Robert Lewandowski became just the third player, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, to score 40 goals in five consecutive seasons.

The Pole did so from the penalty spot as Bayern Munich saw off Union Berlin.

The win keeps them top of the Bundesliga and further cements Lewandowski's place in history.

Only the great Gerd Muller ranks above the 31-year-old in Bayern's all time scoring charts.

And Lewandowski is on course to break his single season record which currently stands at 43.

He achieved that number in the 2016/17 season but has at least another ten games with which to better his current total.

The Pole moved from Borussia Dortmund in 2014 when Pep Guardiola was in charge in Bavaria.

His contract at Signal Iduna Park had been allowed to run down and, after making his name with Dortmund, he moved to the Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski's four-goal display in the Champions League against Real Madrid was perhaps his finest display in a Dortmund shirt.

And after two Bundesliga titles he moved to Bayern where he was won the title in each of his five years at the club.

The Champions League still eludes him but the Bavarians are among the favourites for this year's competition - should UEFA find a method of concluding it.

Despite his colossal amount of goals the Pole does often get overlooked due to the numbers regularly put up by Ronaldo and Messi.

The pair have 11 Ballon d'Ors between them which underlines their quality.

But in two of the last five years Lewandowski has out scored Ronaldo - including last season when his total was 12 more than the Juventus star's.
