Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski has entered the German football record books on the final day of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season.

The ever-prolific Polish striker left it late to notch his 41st League goal of the season as Bayern celebrated their ninth successive title triumph with a 5-2 demolition of Augsburg at the Allianz Arena.

That stoppage-time effort - which came after he was denied by a number of fine saves from compatriot Rafal Gikiewicz - saw Lewandowski break a 49-year Bundesliga record belonging to Bayern and Germany icon Gerd Muller, who notched 40 times during the 1971/72 season.

“I really have no words to describe this,” Lewandowski said.

“When you try over 90 minutes to score a goal and it is just not happening and then with the last kick of the game you score then it feels absolutely amazing.

“I am very happy. This is certainly a highlight in my career.

“It was difficult for me to remain patient. But I kept believing that the situation might come and I would have to be ready for it.”
