Aug. 29--Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will not play against the Baltimore Ravens in a preseason game on Saturday as expected after a neurologist reversed course Friday regarding Griffin's recovery from a recent concussion.
Independent neurologist Robert N. Kurtze originally said Griffin was cleared to play on Thursday. Kurtze, though, released the following statement Friday regarding the situation:
"Per discussion with Neuropsychologists and with Anthony Casolaro M.D., we had anticipated yesterday that the patient would be cleared for full participation in gameplay this weekend; however, upon further scrutiny today of the neuropsychology data, I agree with the neuropsychologist that he should be held from gameplay this weekend and be retested in one-two weeks before a firm conclusion to return to gameplay can be made."
Griffin was injured when trying to recover his own fumble in a 21-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on Aug. 20. Griffin lost control of the ball when he began to scramble from the pocket. When trying to recover the fumble he was landed on by an opposing defender and a teammate.
The Redskins said that Griffin had followed all NFL mandated concussion protocols leading up to Thursday's announcement that he was cleared to resume play.
"I feel good, just trying to take care of everything and be as cautious as possible," Griffin said Thursday. "It's not about anything but my family and them caring for me and my well-being. I know my teammates care about me and have been asking about me every single day."
Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, who each outperformed Griffin against the Lions, will share quarterback duties in his absence. Cousins completed eight of 12 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. McCoy completed five of six passes for 80 yards and a score. Griffin was two for five passing for eight yards.
Griffin took to Twitter later Friday, saying: "Trusting in God even when I don't understand why certain things happen."
