Robert De Niro's former assistant binge-watched Friends instead of working, lawsuit claims

Robert De Niro's production company is suing a former employee, accusing her of spending "astronomical amounts of time" binge-watching Netflix at work.

Canal Productions has filed a $US6 million ($8.8 million) lawsuit against Chase Robinson, who was hired as an assistant to De Niro in 2008, before being later promoted to the company's vice president of production and finance.

She left the company in April this year, Variety reported, amid growing concerns about alleged "corporate sabotage".

According to the lawsuit, Ms Robinson — who the company has accused of embezzling money and using millions of De Niro's frequent flyer miles for her personal trips — rarely came into work.

She spent "astronomical amounts of time" watching Netflix during work hours, it stated, and during a four-day period in January this year, she binge-watched more than 50 episodes of the television sitcom Friends.

According to the lawsuit, about two months later over another four-day period, she watched 20 episodes of Arrested Development and 10 episodes of Schitt's Creek.

"Watching shows on Netflix was not in any way part of or related to the duties and responsibilities of Robinson's employment and, on information and belief, was done for her personal entertainment, amusement and pleasure at times when she was being paid to work," the company wrote in the lawsuit, according to Variety.

Ms Robinson is also accused of accruing exorbitant hotel and restaurant bills, including $US12,696 ($18,731) in unauthorised charges at Paola's Restaurant over a two-year period.

According to the suit, Ms Robinson drafted a recommendation letter for herself following her resignation, which De Niro refused to sign, Variety reported.
