Robby Anderson wants to become best wide receiver in football in 2019

2018 was a down year for Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson, but that’s not stopping him from setting his goals high for this upcoming season.

With a new head coach, new offense and an improved Sam Darnold entering his second season, Anderson believes he has what it takes to join the ranks of the elite at wide receiver in 2019. Doing so will not be an easy task, but Anderson knows what he is capable of and has his sights set on becoming one of the best players at his position nonetheless.

“[2018] was a down year for me,” Anderson said. “I know my capabilities. I know what I want to become… and that’s the best receiver in the NFL.”

Throughout his NFL career, Anderson has been somewhat of a one-trick pony. He has proven himself as a solid deep threat who has good ball skills and can take the top off an opposing defense. However, his underneath route running skills have left a little to be desired and have prevented him from being considered elite.

With Gase’s offense in place, that has a chance to change in 2019. Todd Bowles didn’t utilize Anderson on underneath routes throughout his tenure as head coach, so the Temple product did not have many chances to develop that part of his game. Gase plans on expanding Anderson’s route tree and using him in multiple ways, not just routes deep down the field.

“We’re just going to keep trying to think of ways to get him the ball, ways to create variety in his routes,” Gase said. “Instead of just doing one or two things, maybe we can open that thing up to five, six, seven things to where he’s a threat on multiple levels whether it be underneath, intermediate or down the field.”

Could 2019 be the year Anderson puts it all together and establishes himself as one of the most dangerous wideouts in football? It’s certainly possible. Given his elite speed and already established down the field prowess, Anderson has what it takes to expand his skill set under Gase and take his game to the next level this upcoming season.
