Robbie Savage's son Charlie signs first professional contract with Man Utd

Robbie Savage’s son Charlie has signed his first professional contract with his father’s former club Manchester United.

The older Savage spent his youth career at United before departing for Crewe Alexandra in 1994 and now his 17-year-old son has followed suit.

Charlie was promoted in the United under-18s side ahead of this season and has impressed under Neil Ryan for the young Red Devils.

Playing in central midfield like his father did for the likes of Leicester City, Birmingham City and Derby County, the Welshman has made 17 appearances in the Under 18s Premier League.

Featuring largely in defensive midfield, with a one-game spell at left-back, he has scored two goals and notched five assists.

That has helped the young United team to rise to the top of the North division, having won 15 matches and lost just three times, putting them two points ahead of rivals Manchester City.

He also earned a call up for Wales Under 18s, playing 75 minutes against England in last month’s international matches.

The midfielder has clearly impressed the United hierarchy, with his form for the Under 18s being rewarded with call-ups for two Premier League 2 matches in March.

He was named on the bench for both the goalless draw with Brighton and the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, though did not feature in either match.

In a sign of how highly he is rated by his father’s old team, United have now handed Charlie his first professional contract with the club.

The youngster announced the news on Twitter, sharing his delight and insisting this is just the start of his time at United.

“Delighted to have signed my first professional contract at Manchester United,” he wrote.

“I would like to thank all of my friends, family and everyone @neweraglobalsports for all their support.

"The hard work continues.”
