Robbie Savage makes wage claim as he backs striker's choice to withdraw from Leeds United game

Robbie Savage has backed Lyle Taylor’s decision to sit out the rest of Charlton Athletic’s season - by claiming the striker may only earn £500 a week.

Taylor is out of contract at the end of the month and has turned down the offer of a short-term extension to see out the season with the Addicks in order to avoid injury ahead of moving clubs in the summer.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has opted against involving the striker in his side’s two games before the end of June, arguing he needs players that are committed for the remainder of the season.

The striker's decision also means he will miss Charlton's last game of the season against Leeds United, which could be vital at either end of the table.

Taylor has been linked with a move to the likes of Rangers, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and Burnley, all of whom will likely increase the player’s wages.

Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser has taken a similar decision to Taylor but Savage argued that the wage difference between the Premier League and the Championship mean the pair’s situations are different.

“I’d do exactly the same thing in Lyle Taylor’s situation,” he said to BT Sport.

“He’s got a potential dream move and earn four or five times as much for his family.

“He’s been around the lower leagues and helped Charlton get into the Championship.

“They’re really struggling at the minute and he’s probably one of their best players.

“I agreed with his decision not to play in these games because the difference is, as a Premier League player, you’re going to be earning thousands of pounds every week.

“The average is £70,000 a week.

“For Lyle Taylor, he might be on £500 or £600 a week and will be going to life-changing sums of money.”
