Robbie Savage defends Manchester United star Phil Jones

Robbie Savage believes Manchester United defender Phil Jones warrants more respect than he is currently getting.

Savage made the claim during United’s Europa League group stage opener against FC Astana this evening.

Jones, one of nine changes to the side that defeated Leicester City 1-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford last Saturday, has often come in for criticism from some United supporters.

But Savage, co-commentating on the game this evening, has sprung to the defence of the former Blackburn Rovers man.

On BT Sport, the Welshman said: “You know Phil Jones, his best Manchester United days probably are behind him, but I think he deserves a little more respect than some people show him at times.

"This is his ninth season at Manchester United and has 40 caps or so for England. Yes, he is not the player he was in a Manchester United shirt but he always gives his best, and possibly his best days as a Manchester United player are behind him.

“To achieve what he has achieved in his career, he has done absolutely fantastic."

To date, the 27-year-old has won a Premier League title, the FA Cup, the Europa League and two Community Shields.
