Robbie Neilson's path to win back Hearts fans mapped out as former Rangers boss in Ann Budge 'remit' defence

Under-fire Robbie Neilson can win back the Hearts fans with a five game winning streak to close out the Championship season, claims Stuart McCall.

It has been a terrible week for the Jambos having been knocked out of the Scottish Cup in humiliating fashion by Highland League minnows Brora Rangers and defeated at Tynecastle by Queen of the South.

It comes after supporters protested before kick-off against the Doonhamers, calling for boss Neilson and owner Ann Budge to walk away.

However, former Motherwell and Rangers boss McCall told BBC Sportsound that Neilson could still get the support on his side.

With the league leaders 13 points clear at the top of the second tier, McCann believes Neilson has hit the targets laid out at the start of the campaign.

He insists winning all of their remaining fixtures ahead of a Premiership return will appease the fuming Hearts ' fan base.

McCall said: "The remit when Robbie went in there I imagine was to get back up, and get back up the table.

"Now, he is right in what he has said. They are so far clear and it's almost job done.

"Was the remit to come in and play a certain brand of football? They were certainly doing that earlier on in the season.

"Was it to bring young players through and sell a couple on? Certainly when you go into the league above you want to go in with momentum and a good group of players.

"I look at Hearts squad and it's full of experienced players, but there has obviously been unrest. The protests before the game, which is obviously sad to see, defeat to Alloa and Brora the other night, but I did expect to see a real bounce back.

"I was pleased to see they came back to 2-2, but to lose the goal the way they did, that dressing room and Robbie must be at their lowest.

"There is five games to go and they will end up doing what is asked of them.

"For me they are getting back into the division above, which is probably what Robbie was asked to do, but there has been a lot of sticking points since earlier this year.

"The only way he can get out of this is winning his last five games and turn opinion around.

"It's a tough time for everyone, not only Robbie but the owner Ann Budge, who seems to be getting a lot of criticism as well."
