Robbie Neilson reveals Hearts winger plan in order to ensure maximum impact from Josh Ginnelly and GMS

Robbie Neilson has shared his plan to get the maximum impact from his Hearts wingers.

Gary Mackay-Steven and new loan signing from Liverpool Ben Woodburn started yesterday’s 2-0 win over Dundee United.

The three points kept Hearts joint-top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Woodburn was taken off just after the hour mark for Josh Ginnelly, while Mackay-Steven made way for Armand Gnanduillet just a few minutes later.

It proved an inspired move by Neilson as Ginnelly tee'd up the big French striker for Hearts’ second goal as the game moved into stoppage time.

Ginnelly’s pace and directness caused United problems as soon as he was introduced.

And Neilson admitted that he doesn’t expect his wide men to put in a full 90 minute shift every week, as long as they affect the game while they’re on the park.

He explained: “For me with these wide guys, you do 60-30. I don’t think you can ask them to do a full 90 minutes. It’s very, very difficult.

“We ask them to come back and help the defence and if they're transitioning, go and break forward, so that’s the way they’ll be this season.

“I spoke to them about it and they understand that it’s about making an impact, whether it be in the first 50 or 60 or the last thirty minutes.

“I thought Gino [Ginnelly] and Ben both gave us that impact; Ben at the start, Gino coming on and also GMS in the first half.”

Hearts go into the international break in a healthy position and only goalkeeper Craig Gordon and defender Michael Smith will be on duty with their respective countries over the next two weeks.

Attention has already turned to the first game back, which is the long-awaited return of the Edinburgh derby to Tynecastle.

“We spoke after the games yesterday and all eyes are on Hibs now,” Neilson told Hearts TV. “It’s so important for us. It’s going to be a full, rocking Tynecastle and if we get the three points we’ll be delighted.

“The boys have got a couple of days off now but we get back to work again next week.”
