Robbie Neilson reveals Hearts summer transfer plans and confirms youngsters will get their chance

Robbie Neilson has outlined his summer transfer plans for Hearts, but has warned not to expect wholesale changes to the squad.

Owner Ann Budge spoke earlier in the week about budgeting for the worst case scenario given the uncertainty over when clubs might see ticket revenue return.

Neilson admitted there’s scope to do the business he feels is needed for what will almost certainly be a return to the Scottish Premiership.

But he won’t be ripping it up and starting again after a season in the Championship.

He said: “We haven’t nailed it down yet but we know there’s scope there to move players in and move players out.

“We’ve got a number of players that are out of contract in the summer and some of them will go, which will free up money from the budget then we’ll have a look at things towards the end of the season.

“But we’re already looking at targets for next year to make sure that we improve the squad, because I think it needs improved and there’s a chance to do it if we get over the line in this league and then go and challenge towards the top end of the top flight.

“I see that when we win a game 3-0, we don’t need any change. When we draw a game 1-1, we need ten new players.

“Yes we need to bring some players in and there’s players that will leave as well, but it;s not going to be wholesale changes.

“I think it’s important that we have continuity when we move over the line in this league first and foremost and keep the team together.”

The return of Leagues One and Two will see the clubs young loanees return to action.

Many have been without games all season, but Neilson insists they’ll still get their chance despite a difficult year at youth level.

He added: “One hundred per cent. It’s a big part of Hearts and we’ve got a great academy here.

“It’s about giving them the opportunity and the pathway to come through. This year’s been very difficult for them because generally they’d be playing every week either in the reserves or out on loan.

“You could watch them and try and guide them through it.

“But there will be opportunities towards the end of the season for some of the younger ones to get into the squad and into the team.”
