Robbie Neilson outlines Hearts' new set-piece approach that came up trumps in 2-0 win over Aberdeen

Robbie Neilson has outlined Hearts ' new approach to set-pieces designed to yield a higher goal return.

And it's already started working after Stephen Kingsley rose to put them 2-0 up against Aberdeen and make the points safe.

The Jambos led lead at Tynecastle. thanks to John Souttar's first half volley.

And Kingsley left Joe Lewis with no chance when he got on the end of a corner on the hour to net the second.

Craig Gordon did his bit to save Lewis Ferguson's controversial penalty.

Neilson wasn't happy with the number of goals his team had scored from set plays this season, so assistants Lee McCulloch and Gordon Forrest got to work on new ideas to help increase their tally.

And the fruits of their labour were seen last night, much to Neilson's delight.

“My two assistant managers and the analyst have done a lot of work on it recently,” he told BBC Scotland.

“To be honest with you, we haven't’ been great at first contacts when attacking set plays, so the last two or three weeks they’ve been working with the players.

“It’s about the movements, the delivery and we’ve changed quite a lot compared to what we did at the start of the season. Now we’re seeing the benefits of it.

“Prior to this game, we looked at it and we’d only scored three or four goals from set plays, whereas I think Aberdeen had scored about 11 or 12.

“So that’s a massive difference and we’ve managed to get a goal from it tonight, which is brilliant.”

Despite being 12 points clear in third place, Neilson has demanded no let up from his charges ahead of their trip to Tannadice on Saturday.

He added: “This is Hearts. You need to win every week.

“We go to Tannadice at the weekend and we need to win. That’s just the way it is.

“That’s the pressure the players have. It doesn’t matter if you’re a point behind, a point ahead of 12,13 - whatever we are, I don’t know.

“It’s about winning on Saturday now.”
