Robbie Neilson insists Hearts' new signing Aaron McEneff will shine as he issues Andy Irving contract update

Hearts boss Robbie Neilson insists the best is yet to come from new signing Aaron McEneff.

The 25-year-old started his first game for the Jambos in the 1-1 draw with Morton at the weekend following his arrival from Shamrock Rovers last month.

After making substitute’s appearances against Ayr and Queen of the South, the midfielder impressed on his home debut.

However, Neilson admits the Irishman’s influence waned towards the end of his first 90 minutes since Shamrock’s FAI Cup Final defeat to Dundalk in early December.

Neilson said: “I thought he did very well in the first-half but started to fade in the second.

“That was his first start since December 6. That’s a long time.

“As he gets fitter and stronger, we’ll see exactly what he does well, which is break forward, link with strikers and get shots at goal.”

Substitute Jamie Walker rescued a point for Hearts with his 50th goal for the club, whilst Neilson called Andy Irving and January recruit Armand Gnanduillet off the bench in search of victory.

The Jambos boss is also expecting improvements from Gnanduillet in the coming weeks as the former Blackpool striker continues his recovery from a recent hamstring problem.

He added: “(Armand’s) still working on his fitness. He came on against Raith Rovers and a couple of others, but he got injured again.

“He’s not had many starts since the summer, with going to Turkey and then coming back.”

Meanwhile, Neilson remains hopeful the club can agree a new contract with Irving, whose current agreement at Tynecastle expires in the summer.

He explained: “We’re still negotiating, still trying to get the deal done. It’s like anything in football, it can take a while. We’ll continue to do that.”
