Robbie Neilson in Gary Mackay-Steven Hearts confession as he delivers Dundee United injury update

Robbie Neilson will make a late call over Michael Smith before today's clash with Dundee United with Cammy Devlin likely to miss out.

Hearts return to action at Tynecastle this afternoon desperate to put behind the thumping loss to Rangers and get back to winning ways quickly. They previously put together a ten-game unbeaten run before that defeat under the lights in the capital midweek and something similar would more than boost their hopes of finishing third behind Celtic and Rangers in the Premiership this season.

Ahead of welcoming United to Gorgie, Neilson has given an update on the state of play in his squad with Gary Mackay-Steven's season looking over at this stage after going under the knife to rectify issues. He's out of contract in the summer but his club boss says the most important thing for him right now is to get back to full fitness. He told Edinburgh Evening News :“It’s unfortunate. It was initially a foot problem and then an ankle problem, so he’s had an operation. It’s disappointing for Gary. He’s a great boy who I’ve known for a long time.

"He’s never really managed to get going this season. He’s out of contract at the end of the season but the most important thing is getting fit again. It looks like season over, but he might get fit for the final few games.”

After today's meeting with the Tangerines all focus turns to the Scottish Cup with a clash at Championship Hamilton Accies the reward for defeating Hibs in the last round.

Victory over John Rankin's men next Friday night would secure a last eight spot in the competition - a tournament they went all the way to the final in last term.
