Robbie Neilson Hearts return approach booted out by Dundee United as Jambos make move for former boss

Dundee United have thrown out an approach from Hearts to bring Robbie Neilson back to Tynecastle as boss.

Record Sport understands the Jambos have been denied permission to speak to their former player and manager in a move that effectively spells the end for Daniel Stendel.

The German's future has yet to be resolved following Hearts' relegation to the Championship but his contract includes a clause which permitted him to leave should the club go down.

Neilson guided the Gorgie side to the Championship title in 2015 and Ann Budge wants to bring him back for another tilt at promotion.

United have no desire to let the 40-year-old go as they prepare for life back in the top-flight - but it remains to be seen whether Budge will try again.

Neilson's contract on Tayside runs until 2022.

Hearts have taken their fight against relegation to the courts after seeing a bid for league reconstruction rejected by SPFL clubs.

The legal fight could prevent United being promoted and they vowed on Friday to defend their position.

A successful action from Hearts could cost the SPFL around £8million.
