Robbie Neilson cool over Dundee United's promotion prospects as he sends crisis vote message to clubs

Robbie Neilson insists he's remaining calm over Dundee United 's promotion prospects.

The runaway Championship leaders stand to be one of the big winners if the SPFL's season ending resolution is given the green light.

Scottish clubs have until 5pm on Friday to vote on whether to end the second-tier campaign - plus League One and League Two - immediately.

And a 'yes' vote would send United back to the Premiership next season.

But while Neilson is hopeful, he's well aware the decision is out of the club's hands.

He told BT Sport: "Our objective at the start of the season was to get promoted. Obviously we’d have liked to have done that by the usual circumstances. But it’s in the hands of the SPFL and the member clubs to decide.

"We’ve been top of the league since day 1 and have a 14-point lead with 10 games to go and it’s been a difficult four years for the fans travelling across the country in the Championship and we’ve managed to get ourselves in this position so we would hope to go up but, ultimately, it’s out of our hands.

"Everyone would like to get back to football as soon as they can and finish the season but I don’t see much point stressing about it because there’s nothing they can do. Might as well try and enjoy this period as much as we can with our families.

Some clubs, including Hearts, Rangers and Falkirk, have already set out their opposition to the proposal.

And although Neilson understands there is no perfect solution, he's urged clubs to look at the bigger picture.

"I totally understand it," he insisted. "Not everyone is going to be 100 per cent happy.

"But you have to look at the greater picture, first and foremost the health of everyone and then, off the back of that, looking after Scottish football as a whole. It’s not just about 1 or 2 clubs."

The Tannadice boss also told how the coronavirus shutdown has made planning for next season extremely challenging.

He added: "Generally, you’d be speaking about players you want to bring in and players that would leave the club as well.

"We’ve got targets we’re looking at but we don’t know what budgets are going to be like, whether the season’s going to get finished and don’t know what league we’re going to be in either.
