Robbie Keane pays tribute to his dad on 18th anniversary of death

Robbie Keane has paid an emotional tribute to his father on the 18th anniversary of his death.

Robert Snr died at the age of just 50 in 2003 after a brave battle with cancer.

The Republic of Ireland legend posted on his Instagram story on Wednesday: "18 years ago today. We lost a great man. Miss you dad."

The former striker previously described his dad as 'more like a brother'.

Speaking after his death, Keane said: "My father was a massive influence on my career as well as being inspirational in every part of my life.

"He fought a very brave and long fight against cancer but always remained in good spirits.

"It fills me with pride to remember that the last match he saw me play was against Everton when I was lucky enough to score a hat-trick."

Keane has been coaching Shamrock Rovers' strikers since the start of pre-season in a casual role, but he will not be joining Stephen Bradley's coaching staff.

Keane, who was assistant with Ireland and Middlesbrough, is eager to become a manager and Bradley says he is ‘learning his trade’.

The Hoops boss said earlier this month: “Robbie has been brilliant. He’s been in from the very start and has done this for a number of years. He works extremely hard and he's enjoying it.

“When you have one of the top international scorers of all time and he says he can come in and help, you'd be a fool to not take that option.

“Some of his detail in the finishing department is top class.”

Keane remains under contract with the FAI but does not have a role in the association as Stephen Kenny did not retain him on the senior team staff.
