Robbie Keane in ‘no rush’ to branch out into management as he weighs up next move

Robbie Keane is in ‘no rush’ to branch out into management as he weighs up his next move in football

The Republic of Ireland legend is taking stock following his exit as Middlesbrough assistant to Jonathan Woodgate who was sacked last month.

It was Keane’s second time in three months to lose a job after new senior boss Stephen Kenny confirmed he would not be part of his Ireland coaching staff.

Keane had been one of Mick McCarthy’s assistants and still has two years to run on his FAI contract.

“I’m a student of the game and I’m always learning and studying people, but I’m in no rush,” Keane told the American podcast Kickin’ Off.

“I’ve been an assistant for a couple of years and had two experiences, one with Mick McCarthy and Ireland and then with Jonathan (Woodgate).

“I’m learning my trade and, down the road, of course I want to be a manager. But I’m in no rush.”

Keane said he bumped into his former Inter Milan boss Marcello Lippi on holidays last year and the veteran Italian told him to be patient.

“I’m enjoying the coaching side and I’m learning all the time but there will be a time where I do my own thing,” he continued.

Speaking to a largely American audience, Keane said he would like to become manager of LA Galaxy one day.

He played for the Los Angeles-based club for five years and said: “It’s a place that means a lot to me.

“Galaxy is a team that I love. The people are great, my family loved the country and my youngest lad was born there.

“So down the line, yes, absolutely. If that opportunity came up, I would sit down and speak with them.”
