Robbie Keane finds out by chance that he's cousins with Smiths legend Morrissey

Former Spurs and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane has revealed he found out by chance he is the cousin of Smiths legend Morrissey.

The ex-Irish international had no idea he was related to the singer, 61, until an encounter with a security guard in the US.

Keane, who played for LA Galaxy said: “I was in a shop in LA and some guy comes up to me and says, ‘I’m security for Morrissey. He’s your cousin. He wants to meet you’.

“I was a bit like ‘that’s been forced on me’ so I rang my mother and said, ‘Am I related to Morrissey and she said ‘yeah’.

“I said ‘It took you 34 years to tell me I was related to Morrissey?’

“So I went for dinner with him and we are cousins.”

Keane, 40, revealed the meeting with the Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now singer on Soccer AM Live on Sky Sports.

The star can sing himself and impressed Boy George with a version of Karma Chameleon. The Culture Club star put a video on his Facebook page of soccer player blasting out the song.

Keane, from Crumlin in Dublin, is the second cousin once removed, of the Smiths frontman.

Robbie’s grandfather Thomas Nolan was a cousin of Morrissey’s father, Peter and Morrissey’s mother, Elizabeth lived close to Robbie’s family.
