Robbie Keane could still have role in Ireland setup, says FAI chief Gary Owens

Robbie Keane has not been earmarked for a role with either Stephen Kenny’s Ireland team or Jim Crawford’s Under-21s.

But interim FAI chief Gary Owens has not ruled out the country’s leading scorer having another role within the association.

Keane was one of Mick McCarthy’s assistants and signed a four-year deal at the end of 2018, outlasting McCarthy’s stay by some distance.

It was widely expected that Kenny would not be including him on his staff with Damien Duff, Keith Andrews and Alan Kelly joining forces with the new boss.

Owens told RTE today; "We're in discussions with Robbie and his agent about what role he might play.

“I wouldn't rule him out. Robbie has been one of our best players ever, he would also have a lot to offer.

“We’re open about talking to Robbie and his agent about what role he may or may not play in the association.”

Meanwhile, the FAI wants the Slovakia playoff game in November but must wait for UEFA to decide.

Kenny’s first matches are scheduled to be in the Nations League in September but he will oversee nine games by the end of the year.

Owens expects Ireland to play all six Nations League games, up to two playoff deciders and at least one friendly.

“The fact the (playoff) matches were deferred, we need to give Stephen and the team every opportunity to prepare for that so I’d like the playoff as late as we can,” he said.

“We're trying to get it in November rather than September or October as it will give Stephen the chance to play some Nations League matches and friendlies.

“It's going to be a very busy and exciting time with nine matches in the autumn.”
