Robbie Gould, 49ers reach agreement on long-term deal

Any sliver of hope that Bears fans might’ve had for a Robbie Gould reunion in Chicago was dashed with a showing of faith by San Francisco.

On Monday morning, the 49ers and Gould have reached an agreement on a long-term extension, which comes just before Monday’s deadline for franchise players to sign a deal.

The two-year deal is worth $10.5 million, fully guaranteed, and can potentially become a four-year worth $19 million that would include $15 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter.

Gould held out for the entire offseason program, intent on getting a long-term deal or being dealt out of the Bay Area.

General manager John Lynch refused to entertain an idea for a trade, so the options were clear: either they come to terms on a long-term deal, Gould holds out for the year or the 49ers rescind the franchise tag.

With Gould prepared to hold out for the long-term, fans had a fascination with Gould and his desire to play closer to home in Chicago, where his family lives.

While Gould and the 49ers found resolution, the Bears are still searching for answers at kicker, a position that has snake-bitten them since they released Gould in 2016.

Heading into training camp, the Bears will have two kickers fighting for the starting job in Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro. But much like the Bears kicker carousel has been spinning this offseason, it wouldn’t be a surprise if new names joined the fray.
