Robbie Gotts opens up on what it was like to play alongside his Leeds United hero at Arsenal

Robbie Gotts became the latest academy player to make the breakthrough into the first team when he made his debut against Arsenal.

For players currently at Leeds United's academy, it's yet more evidence of the pathway that is available to them if they work hard enough.

Gotts joined the academy 12 years ago at the age of seven and is a lifelong Leeds United fan. In an interview with Leeds United's official matchday programme, Gotts spoke about the Leeds players that he looked up to during his time in the academy.

"I wouldn't say there was one player in particular - there were a few," he said.

"I always liked Jonny Howson when he broke through. There was Lewis Cook as well, and even Kalvin Phillips.

"Playing with Kalvin [against Arsenal] on Monday felt nice and a but surreal, too, as there were times when he was playing and I was the ball-boy!"

He reflected on his time at the academy, saying: "Thorp Arch was like my second home really. My mum and dad used to finish work early to travel down. I was at school but all I was thinking about at school was getting to training. Coming here and growing up with lads like Alfie McCalmont and Jamie Shackleton and coming through with them... It's been great, really."

Robbie Gotts made 35 appearances on the Whites' bench without getting on the pitch before making his full debut against Arsenal in the FA Cup.
