Robbie Fowler shares Harry Kane transfer doubt and warns Liverpool over summer plans

Kop Idol Robbie Fowler has urged Liverpool to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window, but fears they can’t afford a player like Harry Kane.

Kane is reportedly looking to quit Tottenham Hotspur in his bid to win trophies but Fowler reckons his old club wouldn't be able to foot the bill for the England captain.

Turning 28 in July, Kane, who broke the 20-goal barrier for the seventh consecutive season, and moved up to seventh on the Premier League’s all-time top scorer list (166) above Fowler (163) this term is arguably at the peak of his powers but potential suitors might be put off spending big money for him because there is unlikely to be much resale value.

After finishing empty-handed in the silverware stakes this year, Fowler believes Liverpool need to reinvest in their squad this summer to avoid falling behind their rivals but admits the club’s owners might balk at the prospect of splashing out on a big transfer fee for Kane.

He told talkSPORT : “Whenever you are involved in a football team, you always want to sign players regardless of the positions that need strengthening.

“You need to strengthen every area. You need to strengthen the squad, so you need to bring players in who will keep players on their toes.

“I’ve always had a theory that if you’re not signing players, you’re potentially going backwards because other teams in and around you will be signing players and going that little bit further.

“If a club have got real ambitions of winning Premier Leagues, winning Champions Leagues, then you’ve got to sign players.”

Fowler added: “Harry Kane is one of the outstanding players in the Premier League, he really is. I’m not surprised that there’s not going to be a shortage of clubs wanting to sign him.

“Whether clubs can afford him, I don’t know. You look at City and Manchester United, they could probably afford him.

“I’m not sure Liverpool have got the money to bring in a player of that ilk and a player of that price.”
