Robbie Fowler's hope for Jurgen Klopp future and Steven Gerrard at Liverpool

Robbie Fowler admits he could see Steven Gerrard returning to Liverpool one day – but wants Jurgen Klopp to stay as manager for as long as possible.

Reds legend Gerrard has impressed since being appointed Rangers manager back in 2018, and is seen by some supporters as a possible successor to Klopp at Anfield somewhere down the line.

The former captain has his side level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, and has recorded wins over Porto and Feyenoord in the Europa League this season.

Former team-mate Fowler, though, hopes Gerrard’s potential return to Liverpool won’t happen for some time yet, enabling Klopp to lead them to more success.

“You can never say never is football, and Steven is doing a wonderful job up at Rangers,” Fowler told TalkSPORT.

“You’ve got to ask the question, are they a better team now since he took over? Of course they are, they really are.

“Will he want to leave and go back to the Premier League? No doubt about it and in the future he probably will do.

“He’s the name on everybody’s lips should Liverpool be looking for a new manager, but as far as I’m concerned I don’t want them to be looking for a new manager.

“I want Jurgen to stay for a long time because if he stays for a long time it means Liverpool as a club are successful.

“So all the talk about should Steven be there, of course he’ll be the name on everyone’s lips, but I hope it’s not for a long time.”

Fowler, who is now head coach of Australian side Brisbane Roar, has heaped praise on Klopp as the Reds go from strength to strength in their hunt for the Premier League title.

The European Champions went eight points clear at the top of the table with Sunday’s win over Manchester City – and the former striker believes there’s still more to come from the German’s side.

Fowler added: “You’ve got to give Jurgen so much credit, Liverpool are just brilliant.

"He’s got them fit and on fire, they just look an incredible team.

“And people are saying they’re watching great performances, but Liverpool haven’t really reached the heights of what they can do – it’s a scary thought!”
