Ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler believes that there will be a shock winner of the Champions League in 2019/20, in the form of Atletico Madrid.
Both Spurs and Chelsea qualified for the competition via a top four Premier League finish last season, with both clubs hoping to make it as far as they can in the competition. Beaten in the final by Liverpool in 2018/19, Tottenham will have hopes for going one better this time around.
But, Fowler doesn't believe that there will be an all English final in 2019/20, with La Liga side Atletico springing a surprise.
"My career as an expert tipster never took off, but, if I’m offering a decent bet this season at reasonable odds, then it would be on the Champions League," Fowler said, as reported by the Mirror .
"Liverpool know how to get to the final, obviously, and so do Real Madrid.
"Manchester City are desperate to lift the trophy and I expect Pep Guardiola to throw resources at it, by resting players in the Premier League. Barcelona will also be out to make amends for their shock exit at Anfield last season.
"But I have a surprise choice to give you a run for your money – Atletico Madrid. True, they have lost Rodri to City and Antoine Griezmann to Barca this summer.
"But they have signed wonderkid Joao Felix from Benfica, Marcos Llorente from Real Madrid, Mario Hermoso from Espanyol and Kieran Trippier from Tottenham.
"And, in Diego Simeone, they have a manager who knows how to win things."
The draw for the group stages of the competition, featuring Tottenham, Chelsea and Atletico Mardid takes place on Thursday 29th August in Monaco.
