Robbie Benson didn't enjoy sitting out Dundalk's European run

Robbie Benson admits it was no fun being a couch potato during Dundalk’s European run.

The midfielder suffered a rib injury in the first half of the opening Champions League clash against Riga at Oriel Park.

And it put an end to his involvement in the entire European campaign as he hasn’t played since.

It was just another frustrating spell on the sidelines having already broken his leg in the opening league game of the season.

But Benson was back from the rib complaint on Monday having made the squad for the 3-0 home win over UCD, although he didn’t get on in that rescheduled game.

He might get some minutes off the bench tonight when the Lilywhites face the same opponents at Belfield.

Benson said: “It was nice to be back involved in a matchday set-up and not up in the stands, which I’ve done too much this season. There’s a lot to play for and if I can get to the end of the season without breaking another bone I’ll be happy enough!

“Getting back playing would give me a lot of confidence and be able to deal with those blows.

“It was frustrating watching the lads over in Azerbaijan and Slovakia when I’m sitting at home on the couch in pain. That was a tough time but there’s still a lot to play for and I want to get back and help.”
