Robbery bid brute stabbed victim then slashed passer-by

A bottle-wielding thug stabbed a man and slashed another during a violent robbery attempt.

Nathan Stewart, 20, plunged a broken bottle into Kenneth McGuire’s stomach during the attack, which took place at a newsagent’s.

Stewart then slashed have-a-go hero Scott Dominick on the face for intervening during the disturbance, which spilled onto the road at High Street, Johnstone .

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Stewart wandered into Ritchie’s newsagent’s armed with a green bottle and was concealing his face with a scarf, when he approached Mr McGuire and attempted to rob him on December 29, last year.

Prosecutor John Penman told the court: “At around 5.40pm, the complainer Mr McGuire was in the shop. Witness Mr Hussein was serving him when the now accused entered the shop.

“The witness noted the accused was holding a green shard of broken glass in his right hand.

“The accused said to him, ‘Give me your money!’

“Mr McGuire replied, ‘Aye f****** sure, go away’.

“The accused approached him and held the piece of glass against his face and said, ‘Give me your f****** money’.

“The witness thought Stewart was going to go for him. He raised his left arm as if to defend himself and a scuffle ensued, which spilled onto the roadway outside.”

The court heard Mr McGuire shouted for help from passer-by Mr Dominick during the struggle outside the newsagent’s.

Mr Penman said: “Mr Dominick was walking past when Mr McGuire asked for his help. The witness was heard saying the accused was trying to stab him.

“Mr Dominick told the accused to calm down.

“Stewart replied, ‘Well, I will just f****** do you then.’

“He swung the broken bottle at the witness several times. The accused then struck Mr Dominick on the face with the broken glass bottle, causing injury to his face.

“By this time, the accused’s scarf had slipped down from his face and Mr Dominick got a good look at him.”

Mr Dominick ran into the shop and asked Mr Hussein to call the police.

The court heard Mr McGuire suffered a wound to the left side of his stomach and injuries to his hand and finger during the incident.

Mr Dominick suffered a wound to his right cheek, requiring five stitches, which will result in a visible scar.

Stewart later sparked chaos at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow following his arrest when he shouted and swore abuse at nurses and spat in the face of a police officer who was trying to restore order.

Stewart, formerly of Greenend Avenue, Johnstone , but currently held on remand in prison, pleaded guilty to charges of assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement, assault to severe injury and attempted robbery, public disorder and assaulting a police officer by spitting in his face.

Defence agent Gordon Ritchie confirmed his client was pleading guilty.

He added he would reserving his plea in mitigation until after the court had obtained background reports.

Sheriff David Pender told Stewart: “For a young man of 20, you have a substantial criminal record.

“These offences are extremely serious and I will adjourn this indictment to call for a Criminal Justice Social Work Report.”

Stewart will discover his fate when he reappears for sentencing on April 24.
