Robbers steal diamonds in Tiffany's heist, slip away undetected

Feb. 05--Three armed robbers made off with an unknown number of diamonds from a Tiffany Co. store in San Francisco on Wednesday, and authorities were scratching their heads over how the trio pulled off the heist without then being detected.

"We're not sure how they got in and got out of the area undetected," said Sgt. Monica McDonald, adding that investigators were looking at footage from surveillance cameras in the area.

The jewelry heist took place around 3 p.m. Wednesday inside the Westfield San Francisco Centre in the 800 block of Market Street, according to McDonald, a spokeswoman for the department.

The robbers ordered everyone in the store to get on the floor and then ordered one worker to open the jewelry cases, she said.

She did not have a description of the robbers or the weapons they used during the heist.

Westfield issued a statement Thursday morning saying no one was injured during the robbery.

"We are working closely with the San Francisco Police Department in their investigation of the incident. The safety of our guests and those who work at the Centre is paramount, and always a priority," the statement read.

A representative for Tiffany could not be reached for comment.
