Robbers attack brave BP garage worker as he tries to stop booze raid

A brave BP garage worker was attacked by two robbers when he tried to stop them stealing alcohol.

The victim was left with injuries to his head and hands just before 6am today after confronting the thugs during the robbery at the petrol station in Islington .

After attacking the staff member, man in his 20s, the two robbers fled with a haul of booze in the direction of Soho Street.

Today police launched an appeal to catch the men and urged drivers to check dashcam footage.

A spokesman said the victim escaped with "minor injuries" and was checked over by paramedics.

Two 39-year-old men have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and have both been taken to local police stations for questioning.

A Merseyside Police spokesman confirmed: "The cashier tried to stop them, before he was assaulted and the offenders made off with a quantity of alcohol in the direction of Soho Street."

Police said the victim was understandably left shaken after his frightening ordeal.

A forensics team visited the forecourt this morning.

Detective Inspector Phil Atkinson said: “An investigation is underway following the robbery this morning and I would ask anyone with information to please come forward.

"The victim has been left understandably shaken by the actions of the offenders, and we will be carrying out a number of enquiries including looking at CCTV to establish the full circumstances."

He added: "If you were in the area at the time and saw any suspicious behaviour, anyone making off from the garage or have any CCTV or dashcam footage, please let us know so we can act upon it.”
