Robbers armed with plank of wood storm shop and threaten worker

A gang of robbers armed with a plank of wood stormed a shop before threatening a worker.

Three thugs raided the McColl's store, in Newton Road, Lowton, on Thursday morning.

After threatening the employee with the wooden plank, the gang left with money.

Police say they fled in a red Vauxhall Astra.

No one was injured in the incident, say Greater Manchester Police.

Eyewitnesses reported the shop being taped off by police throughout Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "Officers were called around 6.30am Thursday 14 January 2021 to Newton Road, Leigh, to a report of a robbery at McColl's supermarket.

"Officers attended and established that an employee was threatened with a plank of wood by three offenders.

"A quantity of money was stolen and the offenders left the scene in a red Vauxhall Astra.

No injuries have been reported and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 3616 quoting incident number 405 of 14/01/21. Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
